CROWNS and BRIDGES
A crown is a dental restoration that covers the exposed surface of a tooth to strengthen it or improve its appearance. Crowns may be recommended when teeth are cracked, broken, discolored, misshapen, or weak due to large fillings or root canal treatment.
Crowns are used for teeth that are too damaged to repair by veneers or fillings.
Crowns can be metal, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. They are fabricated in a laboratory.
A bridge is used to replace 1 or more missing teeth. It includes an artificial tooth or teeth, which are fused to crowns on either side to provide support. A bridge can be used for aesthetics reasons, as well as bite correction, and chewing and speech difficulties.
TYPES of CROWNS:
Dental Institute recommends Zirconia or E.max crowns, as they are the leading technologies in this area.
Zirconia crowns are produced by enhanced porcelain technology; and are very durable. Zirconia crowns are preferred for bridge treatments, due to their strength.
E.max crowns are also made of porcelain. They look very similar to natural teeth, and due to its excellent appearance, they are often used for frontal crowns, and single tooth crowns which is not required to support a bridge.
